Historical Note: The Carbondale Planning Commission develops and promotes a comprehensive plan for the physical and social development of of Carbondale, Illinois, for advisement of the city council (City of Carbondale web site). Stanley E. Harris, Jr., then a professor of geology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, served on the Carbondale Planning Commission from 1967-1969. At the tiime Carbondale was experiencing a population boom and was unable to provide an adequate water supply to its residents. The Carbondale Planning Commission designed a plan to utilize current water supplies more efficiently and began a multi-million dollar project for the Cedar Creek Watershed. This project was a huge success and today provides a clean and abundant water supply for the residents of Jackson County. Other issues which the Commission focused upon during this time included a more efficient design for the streets of Carbondale and potential land use for the City.
