Dr. Lawrence K. Pettit served as Chancellor of Southern Illinois University from 1986-1991. Born in Lewistown, Montana in1937, he earned a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Dr. Pettit has four children and five grandchildren.
During his long academic and political career, Dr. Pettit served as Chancellor of the University System of South Texas, President of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, legislative assistant to two United States Senators, and Administrative Assistant to the Governor of Montana. He has written numerous articles and chapters on the subject of higher education. In 1991 he received the "Meritorious Service Award," conferred by American Association of State Colleges and Universities, November, 1991, "for distinguished leadership in support of the Association's goals in higher education."
Dr. Pettit is also a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and an alumni of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.
