Carbondale Memorial Day Association. | Southern Illinois University Special Collections Research Center

Name: Carbondale Memorial Day Association.

Historical Note: The Carbondale Memorial Day Association was established in 1965 by the Carbondale, Illinois, City Council to plan the celebration of the centennial anniversary of the first community-wide Memorial Day in the nation, which took place in 1866 in Carbondale. It was subsequently incorporated by the State of Illinois as the Carbondale Memorial Day Association, Inc. The group planned events, luncheons, parades and concerts for three consecutive Memorial Days. Each holiday celebration would begin and or culminate at the site of the original event, Woodlawn Cemetery. The association appears to have become defunct after the celebration of 1968.
