Historical Note: David Kenney was born in Carbondale in 1922. He began college in 1940, then went into the service in 1942. In 1946 he was discharged, then in 1951 began to teach political science at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, later serving as Assistant Dean in the Graduate School office. He was influential in instituting graduate level classes at the university. Kenney was an elected delegate for the 1970 Illinois Constitutional Convention. During the convention, he played an role in preparing background research materials. He also served in the cabinet of Illinois Govenor James Thompson for eight years. From 1977 to 1984, he was the Illinois State Historical Presevation Officer. He is the author of several books, including Basic Illinois Government: A Systematic Explanation and An Uncertain Tradition: U.S. Senators from Illinois 1818-2003. Kenney died on June 27, 2014 in O'Fallon, Missouri.
