Regional Association of Concerned Environmentalists (R.A.C.E.) | Southern Illinois University Special Collections Research Center

Name: Regional Association of Concerned Environmentalists (R.A.C.E.)

Historical Note: The Regional Association of Concerned Environmentalists (R.A.C.E.) was organized in 1988 from an earlier (1983) group, "Association of Concerned Environmentalists," or A.C.E. Both were formed in direct response to what members saw as "atrocious land stewardship by the Forest Service." The primary officers of R.A.C.E. were Joseph Glisson, Mark Donham, and Kristi Hanson. In addition to concerns with the management of the Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois, R.A.C.E. correspondence, documents, and lawsuits deal with environmental issues within the Hoosier National Forest, Land Between the Lakes, Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant, and AlliedSignal (later titled Honeywell) in Metropolis.
