Name: Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Coal Extraction and Utilization Research Center.
Historical Note: Southern Illinois University's Coal Research Center (CRC) is committed to the health and safety of coal miners and the human population, while dedicated to cleaner and more efficient production of coal for more than three decades. The 2014 name change from CRC to ACERC (Advanced Coal and Energy Research Center) ensued in order to convey the expanding boundaries of advanced coal and energy related research activities at Southern Illinois University. Under the banner of ACERC, the center will continue in this tradition by working towards clean, efficient and sustainable energy for communities locally and around the globe. The Advanced Coal and Energy Research Center is helping to solve the big problems around the globe. Research has been conducted ranging from mine reclamation, coal processing, and gasification to energy policy, biofuels and renewables. Ever at the forefront of efforts for safer, cleaner and more efficient energy, SIU researchers are making discoveries in areas such as carbon dioxide utilization, chemical looping combustion, microalgal fermentation and advanced materials for fuel cells. SIUC hosted the Energy Debate in 2012 along with a community member to raise awareness of all sides of the clean energy issue.
