The Department of Human Resources at Southern Illinois University Carbondale provides information, assistance, and resources to SIU faculty, staff, retirees, and prospective employees. The Department coordinates human resource policy, procedures, and practices for the SIU Carbondale campus. It also serves as the primary liaison to various state agencies with regard to human resource and benefit-related issues.
Until the fall of 1952 the duties of the Personnel Office were performed as a function of the Business Office. In 1952, the University Civil System of Illinois was established, and the Personnel Office was established by the Board of Trustees as an independent unit, with Willie Poore as the first Director.
The Personnel Office was responsible for the supervision of all civil service employees, and until 1965, the preparation of the university payroll. The Payroll Office became a separate unit under the Controller’s Office in the fall of 1965.
In 1972, with an administrative change, Personnel Services became a responsibility of the Vice President for Administration and Campus Treasurer, later called the Vice President for Financial Affairs. The name changed from Personnel Services to Human Resources between July 1994 and May 1995, and it reports to the Vice Chancellor of Administration and Finance.
