Joseph F. Zaleski was born on December 14, 1912 in Paterson, New Jersey. He received his bachelors degree in Physical Education and Social Studies from West Virginia University in 1936. In 1945 he went back to West Virginia University to earn his masters in Health and Physical Education. Shortly after, he continued his education at the University of Florida and received his Ed.D. in Educational Adminstration and Supervision in 1957.
Zaleski worked as a secondary teacher and altheletic coach in multiple high schools from 1936-1958, pausing to join the U.S. Navy in 1941 and fight in the Pacific Theater. In 1958, Zaleski moved to Carbondale, Illinois and worked as an Assistant Professor and Assistant to the Dean of Students at Southern Illinois University until his death in 1970. Throughout his time at SIU, he also held the positions of Head of Office of Off-Campus Housing and Undergraduate Motor Vehicles and Assistant Dean of Men.
Zaleski married his wife, Juanita Mills Zaleski, on September 9, 1933 and they had two children, Charles and Joseph.
