Name: Abrahamson, Roy E.

Historical Note: Roy E. Abrahamson, Ed.D., taught art education in the School of Art and Design and Southern Illinois University Carbondale from 1965-1996.  He graduated with a B.S. in Art Education from the University of Minnesota in 1949, a Master's degree from San Francisco State College in 1952, and earned his doctorate from Teachers College of Columbia University, New York City, in 1965.  While at Minnesota, he took a summer class taught by German art educator Henry Schaefer-Simmern, who had fled Nazi Germany in 1937 after refusing to join the Nazi party.  Abrahamson was inspired by Schaefer-Simmern's teaching philosophy and studied his life and works throughout his career.  He considered Schaefer-Simmern to be his mentor and practiced his teaching method.
