Dale H. Besterfield was a professor in the College of Engineering at Southern Illinois University Carbondale from 1962-1991. He graduated from Washington University with a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial engineering in 1953, and then spent two years in the Army as a combat engineer. He later worked for Union-Camp Paper Corporation in Trenton, New Jersey as an industrial engineer, quality engineer, and first-line supervisor.
Besterfield is a recognized authority in quality control and has authored numerous publications, including Quality Control, Total Quality Management, and Technical Sketching. He developed and directed the graduate program in manufacturing systems at Southern Illinois University. He also operated his own consulting firm, Besterfield & Associates.
