He taught at Marquette University, Rosary College, Penn State University, and Cal State Longbeach before joining the faculty of the Southern Illinois University Carbondale Criime Study Center. It was when he was in private practice, first with the labor law firm Cotton and Ward and then in his own practice, that Robinson became acquainted with the United Packinghouse Workers of America (UPWA). He represented many union members. Though his teaching career focused on criminal law, he later returned to his interest in labor law to write a biography of UPWA president Ralph Helstein.
