In 1856, Edward Hegeler, a graduate of the School of Mines in Freiberg, Saxony, Germany, immigrated to the United States with a classmate, Frederick Matthiessen, and established Matthiessen & Hegeler Zinc Company (M & H) in LaSalle, Illinois--a zinc mining company. Edward and Camilla Hegeler married in Germany in 1860.
Edward and Camilla raised eight children in LaSalle, Illinois. Their eldest child, Mary learned the zinc buiness at an early age, often helping her father at the plant. She continued this interest by being the first woman to graduate in engineering from the University of Michigan. She was also the first woman to graudate from the School of Mines in Freiberg, Germany. She would Mary Paul Carus in 1888.
