Historical Note: Born in New York, Villeroy A. Tambling settled in Ottawa, Illinois, served briefly in the 11th Illinois Infantry, then reenlisted in the 53rd Illinois Infantry, Company C, where he rose to first sergeant and fought at Hatchie River, Corinth, and Vicksburg. In 1864, he was transferred and promoted to second lieutenant, Company G, 13th U. S. Colored Infantry. Promoted to first lieutenant after the Battle of Nashville, he was mustered out in 1866. After the war, Tambling moved to San Francisco, where he served as chaplain of the Lincoln Post, G. A. R.
