Historical Note: Born in Arkansas, Larkin Cantrell settled in Benton, Franklin County, Illinois, and taught school. Married Mary E. Fleming, May 4, 1858. Enlisted in James J. Dollins Independent Cavalry Company, attached to the 31st Illinois Infantry, the 4th Illinois Cavalry, and eventually incorporated as Company C into the 15th Illinois Cavalry. In December, 1861, acted as company clerk at Cairo, Illinois. Discharged in August, 1862, for having lost his right arm.
