Historical Note: Born in 1833 in Alton, Illinois, Thomas S. Pinckard married Mary Jane Frick in 1855, moved to Springfield, and worked as a printer, rising to foreman of the Illinois State Journal before enlisting in Company F, 1st Illinois Cavalry, in April, 1861.  Pinckard resigned in March, 1862, and clerked as a civilian for his brother William G. Pinckard, a quartermaster.  The 1880 census found the Pinckard family in Atchison, Kansas, where Thomas continued as a printer.  The family later moved back to Springfield, where Mary died in 1897.  Thomas last appears in the 1910 census, outside Springfield; his date of death is unknown.
