Historical Note: According to the Illinois muster rolls, Robert Simms Martin was born about 1842 in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania.  He enlisted in Company G, 47th Illinois Infantry in August, 1861, from Sparland, Marshall County, where he was a farmer.  Martin reenlisted as a veteran in early 1864 while stationed in Mississippi, and was mustered out in Alabama in January, 1866.  After the war, Martin apparently moved to Kansas, where he is buried at Coffeyville, Montgomery County.
