Historical Note: Lay G. Burroughs served as an army doctor in the American Expeditionary Force during World War I, stationed in France from June, 1918, to May, 1919. Burroughs was born in Maryland, the son of William M. Burroughs, said to be a Confederate veteran and member of Robert E. Lee's staff. Before and after his military service, Burroughs practiced medicine in Collinsville, Illinois, across the Mississippi River from St. Louis.
