Name: United Mine Workers of America. Local 5134 (Du Quoin, Ill.)
Historical Note: The United Mine Workers of America was founded in Columbus, Ohio in 1890 by the merger of Knights of Labor Trade Assembly No. 135 and the National Progressive Union of Miners and Mine Laborers. UMWA Local 5134, Du Quoin, Ill., was organized in 1929 for miners at United Electric Coal Company's Fidelity Mine #11, a strip mine located to the west of Du Quoin. From 1975 until it closed in 1991 the mine was owned by the Freemen United Coal Mining Company.
