Historical Note: Beatrice Stegeman was born in 1936 and received her bachelor's degree in 1958 from the University of Illinois, her master's degree in philosophy in 1960 from Southern Illinois University, and her Ph.D in 1967 from SIU.  While an undergraduate, Stegeman was primarily involved in desegregation and achieving equality for African-Americans in southern Illinois. Stegeman received her Ph.D in philosophy and then taught in Cairo, Egypt for three years.  She returned to southern Illinois in 1970 and took many of the skills she had learned in the civil rights movement and applied them to the women's liberation movement in the Belleville-East St. Louis area.  She currently resides in Collinsville, Illinois.
