Historical Note: Southern Illinois University was chartered in 1869 and opened its doors to the first class of entering students in 1874. Originally, the university was called Southern Illinois Normal University. "Normal" Universities in 1874 were teacher's colleges, aimed at standardizing and improving public education in the state by providing more accessible college-level instruction to teachers. Southern Illinois Normal University was the second such university to be established in Illinois. Its first president in 1874 was Robert Allyn.
