Mabel Thompson Rauch was born in Carbondale, Ill., November 30, 1888 to Theodore Wilson and Lovina Rendleman Thompson. The mile-square family farm where she was born is now a part of the campus of Southern Illinois University.
She attended SIU, then spent a year at the School of Music, Belmont College, studying voice. On August 11, 1913, she married James Lee Rauch.
After raising her children, she began a successful career writing about her Southern Illinois heritage. She contributed more than 250 short stories and articles to periodicals, and wrote 2 novels for children.
