The youngest child of Thomas W. Simonds, Robert Simonds was born in Sparta, Illinois on September 4, 1924. He attended Sparta public schools, and in 1943 volunteered to join the military as a Naval Aviation Cadet. Bob took courses while in the service. After being honorably discharged in 1946, he went to the University of Illinois where he completed his Bachelorâ€™s of Arts degree in 1947. It was in college where Bob met his future wife Edith M. Wells (1927-1985), and the two wed in 1949. The couple began working on their family of six children with the birth of their first son Thomas in 1950. Bob Simonds worked his way to the top of Ketchum, Inc., eventually becoming executive vice president in 1985, and serving as a Member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee. Simonds then served as the National President of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity from 1986-1990.
Robert J. Simonds is still alive, now residing in New York. His wife, Edith M. Simonds, died of cancer in 1985.
