Mangelsdorff family | Southern Illinois University Special Collections Research Center
Ernst, Bernhard, and Helmuth Mangelsdorff were brothers from Frankfurt am Main. They also had 2 younger siblings, Wilhelm (Willi) and Ella, to whom they often wrote. Ernst was the first to join the German army, and his 2 brothers followed shortly thereafter. Ernst was in Field Artillery Regiment 111, Unit 1, Battery 3, and Infantry Division 56. Helmuth was in Reserve Field Artillery Regiment 56, Unit 2, 2nd Line Ammunitions. Bernhard began training for service in Darmstadt on January 3, 1917. He was in Regiment 118, Replacement Battalion Company 2, Squad 6. In June of 1917, Bernhard was finished with his training and began working at Field Recruit Depot 919. Bernhard's birthday was on May 6th.
Ernst and Bernhard were both injured in late 1917, and Ernst's injury resulted in his death. On November 7, 1917, Bernhard writes home that he has received the news of his brother's death. After Bernhard was injured, he was then placed in Infantry Regiment 118, Battalion 3, and Company 11.
