Historical Note: Jacob D. Benton was born in 1841. Benton was a pioneer businessman and founder of Dongola's first bank. He both started the business and built the building along with John Holshouser, and Edward Cuhl in 1893. The sign over the counter read "Count Your Money". Benton slept in an apartment over the bank's safe and a trapdoor was made so that he could look down into the bank. Jacob D. Benton was also couny commissioner of Union county and died April 1, 1906. This bank was incorporated into the First State Bank in 1906.
