Historical Note: Mr. Robert O. French is an alumnus of Southern Illinois University.  He is a founding member of the Southern Illinois University Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi.  The Gamma Upsilon chapter was born in 1950 Mr. French's home, and meetings were held on the 800 block of North Marion Street.  The first initiation was held at Rockhill Baptist Church on the East side of Carbondale (Marion and Monroe street intersection), under pastor Luke W. Mingo.  The first Kappa Alpha Psi - Gamma Upsilon Chapter Advisor was Joseph D. Russell, basketball coach at Attucks High School in Carbondale, Illinois.  Other founding members of the Southern Illinois University chapter, in addition to Mr. Robert O. French, included: Raymond Bowers, Emmanuel Duncan, Harold Attyberry Senior, Dahl Mason, Emerson Jackson, John Robinson, Henry Warfield, and Milton Grooms
