Historical Note: James Winfred Neckers was born in Clyner, New York in 1902.  He received his Bachelor of Arts from Hope College in Hope, Michigan.  His Master of Science and Doctorate were received at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.  In 1927 he came to Southern Illinois University as a professor in the chemistry department.  In 1966 he received the Southern Illinois University Alumni Association Great Teacher Award.  Another honor came to Dr. Neckers when the new science building on the Southern Illinois University campus was named for him.  Neckers taught at Southern Illinois University until his retirement in 1979 and was active in the Southern Illinois University community until his death in 2004.
