The student work program, as an organizational function, began with the College Work-Study Program of the National Youth Administration in September 1935. A faculty committee in student employment was appointed, with Wanda Newsome Gum as Executive Secretary. In 1943 the Federal Government terminated the National Youth Administration program, but the University continued to provide employment for students. Wanda Gum resigned, and in 1946, Alice Rector administered the student employment program.
The 1951 Statutes of the Board of Trustees designated student employment and financial assistance as functions of the Office of Student Affairs. In July 1954, the Student Employment Office was removed from the Office of Student Affairs, and made a part of Placement Service. July 1955, the Student Employment office was given independent status, made responsible to the Vice President for Business Affairs, and the name was changed to the Student Work Office. Clarence Stephens was appointed supervisor.
On July 15, 1957 Frank C. Adams was appointed Director of Student Employment, and Clarence Stephens was reassigned to the President's Office effective in January 1958.
The Financial Assistance Center was established in the Office of Student Affairs in 1955, with the appointment of Irwin D. Stasek as Coordinator on 15 September, 1955. He resigned 1 July, 1958. Ronald Green was coordinator from 1 July 1960-1 August, 1963. The Coordinator's position remained vacant after that time and Mary Beimfohr, who was hired in 1957 to be assistant coordinator, became responsible for the student financial assistance function.
In 1965, the Financial Assistance Office was removed from the Student Affairs Office and combined with the Student Work Office. The new office was renamed the Student Work and Financial Assistance Office, and became a unit of the Student Services Organization.
In 1972, Student Affairs became the overall agency dealing in services to students and Student Work and Financial Assistance became a unit of this organization, reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs.
In 1977, Gordon White became director of the Office of Student Work and Financial Assistance. Also at that time, Student Work became a unit under the Student Life Office, reporting to the Dean of Student Life. In 1979, Student Life was made a separate unit of Student Affairs.
