Historical Note: Founded in 1963 as the Southern Illinois Memorial Society, the Memorial Society of Carbondale was created by the Unitarian Funeral Society Committee. The founding members were Edward Adams, David T. Ray, Mrs. Melvin Brooks and Mr. Paul Wendt.  Its mission was to give members options for simple, dignified, and affordable funeral arrangements. The Memorial Society of Carbondale, like similar organizations in every state, was an affiliate of the Continental Association of Funeral and Memorial Societies, a national organization, that advocated on the behalf of funeral consumers.
