Willard "Russ" Wright was born April 2, 1938, in Chicago, Illinois, to Willard and Pauline (Piquard) Wright. He grew up in Murphysboro, Illinois, graduating from Murphysboro High School. He completed a Bachelor's, Master's, and Ph.D from Southern Illinois University. He would go on to teach at SIU School of Medicine and the Department of Rehabilitation until retiring in 2000.
Wright worked at the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 1956 to 1957. He joined the United States Navy in 1962, and served in the Vietnam War on the aircraft carrier Ticonderoga until 1966 as Communications Officer. Wright passed away January 26, 2017, in Carbondale.
