Historical Note: The Southern Illinois University Bicentennial Committee was formed to mark the occasion of the United State's 200th anniversary.  The Committee planned and coordinated activites and events on campus pertaining to the celebration.  Its members were appointed by Hiram H. Lesar, president of Southern Illinois University.  It's first organizational meeting was held October 21, 1974 in the Student Center.  The committee was at first chaired by T. Richard Mager, the Vice President for Development and Services, who resigned in early July 1975. Dr. Mager appointed Rex Karnes, Director of Area Services, to succeed him as chairman October 1975. The committee was composed of members of SIU's faculty that represented various units and groups on campus.
