Historical Note:

Prior to 1966, the Payroll Office was a unit of the Personnel Office.  When the Office of Business Affairs was reorganized in 1966, the Payroll Office was established as a separate department under Business Affairs – Fiscal Division, along with Accounting, Bursar, Disbursements, and Purchasing.  Its primary function is to assemble data and prepare payrolls for all Southern Illinois University Carbondale faculty, staff, and student employees and to provide internal and external reports in support of these payrolls.  It is also responsible for providing information for proper distribution of checks to all employees.

In 1969 the SIU Board of Trustees created the Office of the Controller, and the Payroll Office began reporting to this office when Donald Arnold was named the first Controller in October 1971.  It continued reporting to the Office of the Controller until the Board of Trustees abolished the office at its October 11, 2001 meeting.  Payroll then began reporting to Human Resources.
