Biographical Note

R. Buckminster Fuller (Richard Buckminster), more popularly known as "Bucky" Fuller, was born in Milton, Massachusetts and attended college at Harvard, but he was expelled twice due to contradictory actions. He later received a Doctor of Science degree from Bates College.

Fuller could be defined as an American visionary, architect, author, cartographer, cosmologist, design scientist, educator, engineer, environmentalist, poet and inventor. Bucky Fuller is also described in Current Biography, 1960, as "A mathematical genius, an engineer of rare and extraordinary foresight and a philosopher whose mind bestrides the most colossal problems of life and living."

Fuller is remembered for several works in multifaceted research interests, most notably for the Dymaxion concept (from DYnamic MAXimum tensION/ion), Dymaxion Car, alternate projection Dymaxion Map of the world, and the geodesic domes. Fuller has to his credit 28 patents, and more than sixty honorary doctorate degrees awarded during the course of his lifetime. In 1970 Fuller received the Gold Medal Award from the American Institute of Architects amongst several other awards of merit. Later he was elected as the second President of MENSA.

Fuller was a renowned scholar at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where he was professor of "generalized design science exploration" from 1959 to 1971. He was also a visiting professor on the Edwardsville campus from 1972 until 1974.

Fuller died on July 1, 1983 at the age of 87, 36 hours after his wife's death. Bucky Fuller is buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery near Boston, Massachusetts.
