Scope and Contents of the Materials

This Professor S. Morris Eames Papers consists of correspondence both professional and personal; manuscripts along with notes, bibliographies and indexes of works either authored or edited by Eames; and recommendations and congratulations concerning Eames receiving an Outstanding Teacher Award in 1983. Noteable corresponders includes Lord Bertrand Russell; Ernest Nagel; Mark Johnson; John McDermott; Senator Edward Long; Robert Dewey; and Lewis E. Hahn. The remaining correspondence is mostly between Eames and his students. Also included in the collection are tapes and books produced from the Winterthur Seminars in Switzerland, in which Eames participated. An accession added later to the collection, donated by his wife, contains notes, papers, comments, and presentations related to a book titled Creativity and Democracy that Eames did not finish before his death, though an edited and shortened version of the paper is included in Experience and Value: Essays on John Dewey and Pragmatic Naturalism.

Biographical Note

Dr. S. Morris Eames, born in 1916, was a distinguished scholar in American Philosophical thought and taught at several schools in the country like Culver/Stockton (Missouri) College, University of Missouri at Columbia, Washington University in St. Louis, and at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. He was a devoted teacher, and was particularly concerned with philosophy in general education. He has authored several books of critical relevance in the field of philosophy; notable among his works are The Philosophy of Alexander Campbell and Pragmatic Naturalism. He co-authored the book Logical Methods with his wife, Elizabeth Ramsden Eames, who also taught at Southern Illinois University. Both Morris and Elizabeth were avid readers of and writers on Dewey. He was also the past President of the Missouri Philosophical Association, as well as a participant in the Association of American University Professors, the Association for the Development of Philosophy Teaching, the Society for Philosophy of Creativity, and the World Congress of Philosophy. Eames died in 1986.
