Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of the records of the League of Women Voters of Jackson County from 1925-2007.  The records include bylaws, meeting minutes, correspondence, committee reports, annual reports to the state league, project files, publications of the local, state and national leagues, newsclippings, photographs, and scrapbooks.  The records reflect the League's work related to local, state and national governmental issues. The League takes stands on iissues after careful study, but it never supports or opposes a political party or candidate. Research projects undertaken include the Illinois Constitutional Convention of 1970, school integration in Carbondale, the Cedar Lake Watershed project, and lobbying for passage of the Equal Rights Amendment.

Biographical Note

The National League of Women Voters began once women's suffrage ended with the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution. With the establishment of women's right to vote, women around the country joined together in an  effort to have a voice in government. The League was designed on three levels, local, state and national. An Illinois league was formed in 1925. The Carbondale League of Women Voters (also known as the League of Women Voters of Carbondale) was founded in 1926. In the early 1980s the name of the local league was changed to the League of Women Voters of Jackson County. The mission of the League was to bring important issues of both policy and government to local women. The local league was involved with topics and events that were prominent both locally and nationally. Some of their efforts included work with the Illinois Constitutional Convention, public housing, the integration of education and various political debates.
