Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of the research materials and manuscripts for the book Fred E. Myers: Wood-Carver, by Richard A. Lawson and George J. Mavigliano.  The records focus on the life and work of wood carver Fred Myers, a former Southern Illinois coal miner-turned-artist.  Included are interview transcripts, correspondence, clippings, galleys and manuscripts of the book, and photographs of Myers's carvings used in the book.  Also included are book reviews and clippings relating to a Fred Myers exhibit at the University Museum at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Collection Historical Note

Southern Illinois University Carbondale English Professor Richard A. Lawson and Art Professor George J. Mavigliano co-authored a book on the life and work of coal miner-turned-wood carver Fred Myers.  The book is entitled Fred E. Myers: Wood-Carver and was published by the Southern Illinois University Press in 1980.  Myers had an appendectomy in 1938 which ended his mining career, so he took a job with the Works Progress Administration. Between 1939 and 1942 he worked carving prehistoric animals for dioramas for the Southern Illinois Normal Museum. Because of his already existing injuries, and a substantial hernia condition, he died at the age of 39.  His work was noticed and celebrated outside of Southern Illinois, and because of his work with the college he found mentors and friends who would consistently encourage him to go to graduate school or to persue his work as a career.  Myers never took their advice and many of his sculptures became lamps or were lost altogether.

Biographical Note

Richard A. Lawson is Professor Emeritus in the English Department at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
