Scope and Contents of the Materials

The papers of lawyer, judge, and Illinois Representative, James Robert Williams consist of correspondence, 1877-1918 and a few photographs. Williams was born in Carmi, Illinois. He was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-first Congress and re-elected to the Fifty-seventh and Fifty-eighth Congresses.

Biographical Note

James Robert Williams (1850-1923) was a United States Representative from Illinois (1889-1895, 1899-1905).  He was born December 27, 1850, in Carmi, Illinois.  He attended common schools, graduating form Indiana State University at Bloomington in 1875 and from Union College of Law, Chicago, in 1876. He was admitted to the bar in 1876 and commenced practice in Carmi, Illinois. He was a master in chancery, 1880-1882, county judge of White County, 1882-1886, and was nominee for presidential elector on the Democratic ticket of Cleveland and Thurman in 1888. Williams was then elected as a Democrat to the 51st Congress in a special election to fill a vacancy left by the death of Richard W. Townsend.  After his retirement fromWilliams continued to practice law until his death on November 8, 1923, in Loma Linda, California. His interment is in Maple Ridge Cemetary, Carmi, Illinois.
