Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection contains Betty Mitchell's research for her biography of Deltye W. Morris. It is composed of correspondence, speeches, reports, meeting minutes, newspaper and magazine clippings, Morris's calendar, as well as tapes and transcripts of the interviews Mitchell conducted with those who knew Morris, along with Morris himself and his family. The research spans from Morris's elementary school report cards, to his time as a Professor of Speech, to his legacy at Southern Illinois University, to a transcript of his eulogy.

Mitchell's research includes general university as well, from its time as a small teacher's college to a multi-campus, internationally recognized research university system, as Morris played a significant role in the growth, expansion, and development of the university. Campus unrest for political and administrative reasons was prevalent around of the time of Morris's resignation, and as such, is documentened here in newspaper clippings, reports, and correspondence. The included newpaper clippings and correspondence also concern the University House controversy, the autonomy of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, and the role of universities in public affairs.
