Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of David Breeden's manuscripts from the early 1980's to 2010.  The papers are primarily drafts of his novels, screenplays, stage plays, poetry and sermons and are reflective of his progression of thought while writing.  Not all major or published works are represented.  While not comprehensive, the collection also includes many books, magazines, newspapers, and journals exhibiting Breeden's published poems, articles, reviews and essays.

Biographical Note

David Breeden earned a PhD from the Center for Writers at the University of Southern Mississippi in 1988.  Prior to completing his doctorate, Dr. Breeden earned a Master's of Fine Arts from the Writer's Workshop at the University of Iowa in 1985, a Bachelor's of Arts from Southern Illinois University, and an Associates of Arts from Southeastern Illinois College.

From 1991 to 2005, Dr. Breeden was a tenured professor at Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas where he taught creative writing and world literature classes. He also held positions as the Dean of the School of Liberal Arts (1999 to 2002), and the Chair of the English and Foreign Languages Department (1995 to 2005).  He was President of the Texas Association of Creative Writing Teachers (2002 to 2003) and authored the "Ask Dr. Poetry" column in three newspapers in the mid-1990's.  He also served as a book critic for four newspapers, and published numerous book reviews.

His published novels include A Poet's Guide to Divorce (2005), Aristas (2001), and Another Number (1998).  He has also published several books of poetry including Ice Cream and Suicide (2005), Surviving the Coup (2003), Double Headed End Wrench (1992), and Hey, Schliemann (1990).  His film scripts written include Off the Wall, which won the "Best of the Fest" award at the Great Lakes Independent Film Festival in 2003, House Whine, and Golgotha Hanger.  His plays include titles such as Daddy Wasn't Right and Aunt Emma's Wake, as well as many short stories and poems published in magazines, newspapers, and compilation volumes.

Outside of academia Dr. Breeden participated a great deal in the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Kerrville, Texas, where he served as President and Co-President on several occasions.  In 2005, Dr. Breeden began a new career as a student at the Meadville Lombard Theological School at the University of Chicago.

Administrative Information

Repository: Southern Illinois University Special Collections Research Center

Access Restrictions: Unrestricted access.

Use Restrictions: To quote in print, or otherwise reproduce in whole or in part in any publication, including on the World Wide Web, any material from this collection, the researcher must obtain permission from (1) the owner of the physical property and (2) the holder of the copyright.  Persons wishing to quote from this collection should consult Special Collections Research Center to determine copyright holders for information in this collection.  Reproduction of any item must contain the complete citation to the original.

Acquisition Method: At the request of Dr. Breeden, the collection was shipped from its original location at Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas, to the Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) at Southern Illinois University (SIU).

Preferred Citation: David Breeden Papers, Special Collections Research Center, Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Processing Information: At the request of Dr. Breeden, the collection was shipped from its original location at Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas, to the Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) at Southern Illinois University (SIU).  Therefore, a portion of the collection, and in particular the small magazines and books with Dr. Breeden's published poems, had previously been sorted.  These small publications arrived with numbered slips of paper inserted where Dr. Breeden's work began.  They were in chronological order.  This arrangement style and numerical order was maintained in the present arrangement.  There were a few items missing and in the inventory list that number is marked as "Not received."  Since a partial bibliographic list of these small magazines and books accompanied the material from Schreiner University, this list was scanned and utilized in form and content to complete the current bibliography and inventory.

Finding Aid Revision History: Three additional boxes of materials were received, containing more of Dr. Breeden's work through 2009. I assimilated this material into the current collection, with major changes, but keeping the inventory list as close to the original organization as possible. I consolidated some series and expanded others with the wide-ranging newly-acquired material, deleted the "not received" designations from the inventory list in Archon, itemized the journals containing Dr. Breeden's own work into separate folders rather than the stacks of journals with markers in each, re-foldered some new materials with archival folders, and compressed the collection into 9 standard 12 X 16 archival boxes.
