The collection consists of the papers of Alwin C. Carus, from 1900 to 2004. The papers include personal correspondence, business correspondence, business records, farming records, newspapers, newsletters, slides, photographs, video, film, maps, and information on his family history. This collection documents portions of Illinois history over the last one hundred years, along with farming trends over the last fifty years in the Western United States. In addition, the collection reflects his family, his father Paul Carus, and the origins of his family in Germany. Carus continued to correspond with family all over the world until his death in 2004.

Biographical Note

Alwin Carus was born in 1901 in LaSalle, Illinois, to Paul and Mary Carus. He was the youngest of six children in a large German family. Educated at home until high school, Alwin attended the University of Chicago, studied chemistry and worked for metal and chemical companies during his professional career. Coming from an educated family, Alwin learned German, math, and music at an early age. During his early years, Alwin grew fond of astronomy, farming, the railroad, and the natural world. Alwin's early interests would lead him to work with the LaSalle County Railroad Bureau, buy and develop his own farms, and play witness to over a dozen solar eclipses around the world. Alwin Carus died in 2004.
