Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Southern Illinois University Carbondale Opera Workshop Slides collection depicts Marjorie Lawrence Opera Workshops at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, as well as Marjorie Lawrence.  Slides such as the European Theatres in Action and the unidentified ones were likely used for teaching opera courses as they are not affiliated with SIUC.  These slides are dated 1959-1970 or are undated.  Some slides depict performances dated 1976 which is after Lawrence's tenure as SIU faculty.  The performances are listed under the box inventories.

Collection Historical Note

Marjorie Lawrence was a notable Australian soprano singer and faculty member of Southern Illinois University School of Music from 1960-1973.  She taught courses in voice and directed opera workshops.

Biographical Note

Southern Illinois University was chartered in 1869 and opened its doors to the first class of entering students in 1874.  Originally, the university was called Southern Illinois Normal University.  "Normal" Universities in 1874 were teacher's colleges, aimed at standardizing and improving public education in the state by providing more accessible college-level instruction to teachers.  Southern Illinois Normal University was the second such university to be established in Illinois.  Its first president in 1874 was Robert Allyn.
