Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Morris Library Photograph Collection is an artificial collection of photographs, 35 mm slides, glass slides, and negatives created and compiled by former library faculty and staff.  The images depict library events, faculty, staff, student employees, pictures of library interiors and work areas, exhibits in the Hall of Presidents, and Friends of Morris Library events.  Some highlights include the Morris Library cornerstone laying, the library's 25th anniversary celebration, early leaders such as deans Ralph McCoy and Kenneth Peterson, and interior photographs of various library departments prior to renovation.  The contents of Box 3 contain several negatives used in the ICarbs journal, formerly published by Morris Library in the 1970s and 1980s.  Boxes 4 and 5 contain glass slides of Morris Library floor plans and the "Your University Library" presentation.

Collection Historical Note

Prior to the construction of Morris Library, Southern Illinois Normal University's library was located in Wheeler Library.  When it opened in 1904, SINU was one of the first Normal schools in the United States to have a separate building for its library collection.  During the period of 1948-1950, the number of volumes in the library more than doubled from 73,600 to 111,565.  Southern Illinois University grew dramatically during Delyte Morris's presidential tenure (1948-1970) and the need for a new library became apparent.  The cornerstone was laid in 1953 and the new library, named after President Morris, was formally dedicated on April 25-26, 1958.  The library underwent significant renovations from 2003-2009 and was rededicated on April 16, 2009.
