Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Cordelia Carbaugh Kelly Photographs document life at Southern Illinois Normal University during the early 20th century.   Its primary focus is the Kelly Club and depicts club members, Cordelia Carbaugh Kelly, Marjorie Dunsmore, Kelly Dunsmore, and the club boarding house.  Also included is the Kelly Club constitution and a membership roster.  Other photographs depict Southern Illinois Normal University buildings such as Old Main, the Science Building (Altgeld Hall), Shryock Auditorium, Wheeler Library, and the Old Baptist Foundation.  The collection also contains postcards of Carbondale churches, the Illinois Central Railroad station, and Kelly/Dunsmore/Martin friends and family.

Collection Historical Note

Cordelia Carbaugh Kelly was born on September 23, 1859 to George Washington Carbaugh and Ursula Ann Stephenson.   She married Alexander Garden Kelly (1846-1903) on November 19, 1886 in St. Louis, Missouri, who was a Scottish immigrant and engineer on the Western Pacific Railroad.  They had one child, Marjorie Ramage Kelly, born on April 13, 1891 in Pacific, Franklin County, Missouri.  Marjorie Kelly married H. Boyd Dunsmore and they had one son, Kelly Allan Dunsmore.  She later married Wiseman H. Martin in 1921.

Cordelia C. Kelly and her daughter Marjorie ran a boarding house in Carbondale, Illinois in the early 20th century that housed Southern Illinois Normal University students.  The house was located at 205 West Elm.  Residents of this house were called the Kelly Club.

Processing Information: The original finding aid was created by Special Collections staff in March 1993.

Finding Aid Revision History: The collection was inventoried a second time in August 2003.  The collection was rehoused and renumbered, and description was edited to its current form by Matt Gorzalski in December 2012.

Other Note: When this collection was accessioned and initially processed, some material such as the postcards and ephemera were separated from the collection.  When re-processing occured in December 2012, most of the postcards were located in the Postcard Collection and reincorporated into this collection.  Not all were found, including the ephemera.  See the donor file for an inventory of missing postcards and ephemera.
