Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Community Development Services Photograph and Slide Collection documents the program’s community improvement efforts to attract industry to Southern Illinois towns.  The collection includes images of early Community Development staff, of citizens and their community projects, and of Community Development's tenth anniversary activities in 1963. Most images depict downtowns, businesses, agriculture and farming, and housing.  Some of the areas represented include: Aviston, Cairo, Carlyle, Carrier Mills, Cobden, Chester, Coulterville, Du Quoin, Giant City Park, Golconda, Grand Towner, Hardin County, Garden of the Gods, Harrisburg, Mounds, Randolph County, and the Little Saline River and Lake.  Photographs that appeared in Community Development newsletters from 1964-1966 are also included.

Collection Historical Note

The original Community Development Service was established by action of the Board of Trustees in 1953. As a part of the Area Service Division, the Service was designed to help improve the quality of community life in Southern Illinois.  Richard Poston was the first Director, appointed April 27, 1953.

In 1956 the Board of Trustees established the Community Development Institute, which offered an undergraduate minor and graduate major, with an undergraduate curriculum inaugurated in 1958.  The Institute also trained adults for community leadership and conducted research on community processed and social change.  Richard C. Franklin was the first director, appointed September 1, 1956.  In 1964, the Institute was places under the jurisdiction of the Vice President for Academic Affairs.  In 1966 it was transferred to the State and National Public Services Division of Area Service.

In 1973 the Community Development Service and the Community Development Institute merged into one of the original components of the College of Human Resources.  It became known as the Community Development Services Department.  With the reorganization of the College of Human Resources in 1977, Community Development became a unit of the Division of Social and Community Services.
