Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Richard B. Hildreth faculty papers consists of scripts and audiotapes from radio shows produced by Hildreth for the Saluki Radio Network and SIU Broadcasting Service.  The collection includes a small amount of correspondence, and scripts from unfinished projects he and colleague Walt Richter worked on.  The majority of the Saluki Radio Network audiotapes are organized into the Saluki Radio Network collection.  Hildreth, a professor in the Department of Radio and Television at Southern Illinois University, led the production of many radio shows from 1968-1981.

Biographical Note

Richard B. Hildreth was a World War II veteran and professor in the Department of Radio and Television at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.  During his time in the military, he served as a broadcaster and sportscaster for the Armed Forces Radio.  He received a Master's Degree from Syracuse University in 1968, and later that year arrived at SIUC to become the associate director of the SIU Radio Network (Saluki Radio Network).  In 1972, Hildreth became a full faculty member in the Department of Radio and Television.  He used his position with the department to recruit students for the Saluki Radio Network.  Under Hildreth, the Saluki Radio Network produced many shows which aired nationwide.  The Saluki Radio Network closed its doors in 1981, but Hildreth remained a part of the Department of Radio and Television.  He retired in 1987.  Hildreth was praised for his interest and concern for his students, always pushing them to do more. He passed away in 1994, at the age of 73.
