Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Vice President of Operations records consist of correspondence, financial records, and reports used to oversee the business operations of the Southern Illinois University Carbondale campus from 1960 to 1964. The files document the activities of associations, organizations, and academic departments at Southern Illinois University, as well as state and national associations of which Southern Illinois University was a member. The files also document decisions made by committees during this time, event and program planning, records of the university's involvement in federal and state government, and the personal correspondence of John Grinnell, the first Vice President of Operations. The files also contain plans for building and expansion of both the Carbondale and Edwardsville campuses.

Biographical Note

The position of Executive Assistant for the Carbondale Campus, with the title of Vice-President of Operations for the Carbondale Campus, was created by the Board of Trustees on December 12,  1959. It was created to separate the responsibilities for planning and review from the responsibility for operation. The Vice-President's responsibilities were critical scrutiny and review of the business operation and physicial development of the University and other duties as assigned by the President. The departments that reported to the Vice-President were the Division of Technical and Adult Education, the Division of Extension, the Officer of the Registrar and Director of Admissions of the Carbondale Campus, the General Library, the University Museum, the University Press, the Statistical Service, the Carbondale Business Manager, the Director of the Physical Plant, the Carbondale Personnel Office, Auxiliary Enterprises on the Carbondale campus, and the Carbondale Director of Student Affairs.

John Grinnell was appointed the first Vice-President in February 1960. He went on sabbatical from January to March 1964, during which time Dean William J. McKeefery was the acting Vice-President. After Grinnell retired in September 1964, the role was split into three operating vice presidents: the Vice President for Business Affairs, the Vice President for Academic Affairs, and the Vice President for Student and Area Services. These positions were held respectively by John S. Rendleman, Robert MacVicar, and Ralph Ruffner. In 1968 the Operating Vice President organization was phased out when chancellors were installed on the Carbondale and Edwardsville campuses. Robert MacVicar became the chancellor for the Carbondale Campus, and John Rendleman the chancellor for the Edwardsville Campus.
