Abstract

This small collection of the First United Presbyterian Church of Pinckneyville, Illinois, consists of Church Records, including attendance notebooks, treasurer's records, and some loose receipts, invoices, and financial reports. The most recent records are labelled as First United Presbyterian Church; some early ones read Hopewell Presbyterian Church.

Also included are some of the books from the "United Presbyterian Sabbath School Library," which circulated these volumes as early as 1906. One record book registers lendings from 1906-1910. Most of these are of course religious tomes, including three large reference Bibles. Some of the volumes are in poor condition, but most are fair.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of the records of the First United Presbyterian Church of Pinckneyville, Illionis, from 1879-1958.  The records include attendance notebooks, treasurer's records, financial reports, and sabbath school library books.  There are names of local families, receipts and invoices from local merchants and records related to Sabbath school and the United Presbyterian Church Ladies' Missionary Society.

Biographical Note

Originally the Hopewell Presbyterian Church, this church is recognized as the first one built in Perry County, commencing in 1831. The Hopewell Church group had moved from Caldwell County, Kentucky to Perry County, led by James Steele.

The congregation was organized in 1832 and had about 40 members with Rev. Samuel Baldridge as pastor. By 1855, the number of parishioners had increased so that a new church was built, called the Four Mile Presbyterian Church, according to a genealogist, Erma Walsh, and the old church was left abandoned. It would later be called the First United Presbyterian Church of Pinckneyville.
