Scope and Contents of the Materials

The University Archives Audiotape Collection is comprised primarily of 1/4 inch reel-to-reel audiotapes, created by numerous individuals for a variety of purposes, and compiled into this collection by archivists and librarians at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.  Some of the tapes, particularly the interviews, include a transcript.  The tapes date predominantly from 1962-1970 and are arranged numerically by the number assigned by the archivists over time.  The audiotapes have been digitized and are available online.

The collection covers numerous topics.  Several tapes are interviews with philosophers who were colleagues and/or personal friends with philosopher John Dewey.  These were recorded by SIUC professors S. Morris Eames, Elizabeth R. Eames, and archivist Kenneth W. Duckett during the early years of the Dewey Project, which became the Center for Dewey Studies.  Philosophers such as Horace M. Kallen, Sidney Hook, Edwin Arthur Burtt, and Brand Blanshard (among others), discuss their relationship with Dewey, his life and career, and philosophy in general.  Non-philosophers discussing Dewey include socialist writer Harry W. Laidler and publisher Charles A. Madison.  Other philosophy related recordings feature SIUC professors George Axtelle, George S. Counts, Henry Nelson Wieman, and Charles Tenney speaking about John Dewey or other philosophical ideas.  Additionally, the collection features recordings of author James T. Farrell discussing Dewey’s career and significance, as well as commentary on literature.

Several audiotapes document the history of Southern Illinois University Carbondale and Edwardsville, including numerous commencement ceremonies from the 1960s (predominantly from Edwardsville), as well as several hours of interviews with professor and administrator Charles D. Tenney.  Tenney discusses the history of academic programs and the growth of SIU.

Two additional topics are well-represented in the collection.  There are several interviews with Caresse Crosby recorded by SIUC’s Rare Books Librarian Ralph W. Bushee about the various Black Sun Press publications, recorded around the time that SIUC acquired the Crosby papers and Press materials.  Also, there are several hours of commentary from Eoin O’Mahony in which he discusses numerous Irish (and sometimes British) politicians, literary figures, religious leaders, and activists in a series of tapes called “Footnotes to Irish History.”  O’Mahony was an Irishman and visiting lecturer at SIUC in the mid-1960s.
