Abstract

The Shawnee Community College Oral History Collection consists of transcripts of interviews, reel-to-reel tapes, research files, scrapbooks of newspaper clippings, and other print materials about the southern Illinois region.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Shawnee Community College Oral History Collection, with its taped interviews, transcripts, and newspaper clippings, will be used by students, researchers, and residents who are interested in southern Illinois history and culture. Besides the individual narrative tapes recorded in 1975 and 1976, often first-person accounts of well-known events, the researcher will find additional resources in print material such as newspaper clippings, written memorabilia, and files indexing transcript and tapes by individual and subject.

Collection Historical Note

The collection covers not only individual recollections through taped interviews and transcripts, but also informs the history of several southern Illinois counties and municipalities. Particular counties include Alexander, Johnson, Massac, Pulaski, and Union, plus miscellaneous clippings, photographs, documents, atlases, and maps relating to the region in general. Family and church histories can also be found in this collection.
