Collection Historical Note

Albert Roussel (born April 5, 1869, Tourcoing, France, died August 23, 1937) was a French composer who wrote in various styles and whose music is notable for its lyrical fervour, austerity of technique, and harmonic audacity.  He joined the French Navy, then later attended the Vincent d'Indy at the Schola Cantorum in Paris, where he later taught.  Service at the front with the Red Cross in World War I undermined his health, and he retired to Brittany.
