Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection contains the photographs, scrapbooks, music scores, and correspondence of William Keigley that detail his career as a circus performer and theater manager.

Collection Historical Note

These papers were donated by Patricia Hunsaker an alumni of SIU Carbondale. William Keigley is her maternal grandfather. He was raised in DuQuoin, Illinois. At age 17, he and his brother, Luther left home to join the circus. They performed in various tent and vaudeville shows. William Keigley was well known for riding a slack wire on a bike or unicycle, performing in melodramas and doing a trick where he would screw something to the stage floor, slip his shoes over the flange and swing from side to side. In the 1930s he returned to Southern Illinois and managed movie theaters in many towns.
